Srikanteshwara Temple / Nanjundeshwara Temple is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is situated in pilgrimage town of Nanjanagud, Karnataka, India. Kapila River, a tributary of the Kaveri River flows just 300 mtr from the temple.
Temple is around 1000 years old which is built by many dynasty like Chola, Hyosala, Vijaynagara, Vadiyar. Currently it is maintained by archaeological survey of india.
Nanju in Kannada means Poison and Nanjunda menas God who drunk the poison. Lord Shiva drunk Halahal vish which cme out during Samudr Manthan in Chakshusha Manwantar. The town got the name "Nanjanagud" which means "the abode of the god Nanjundeshwara"
The holy place Nanjungud is mentioned in Shiva Puran and known as Dakshin Kashi. It is believed that visiting the temple after taking bath in Kabini river removes all the sins.
This area is also known as Parsurama kshetra as here he get rid of from Matri hatya dosh. There is Parshuram temple which is around 1 km from the this temple.
